Greenfield Primary School

Physical Education

Intent

At Greenfield Primary School, Physical Education is an integral part of our curriculum that is inclusive and engages all pupils. Children develop the knowledge, skills and competence to excel in a broad range of sports and physical activities in a safe and supportive environment. We aim to deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities that enables all children to achieve their personal best. Children participate in competitive sport and we teach them to do their best and display good sportsmanship.  We aim for all children to be physically active for sustained periods of time and be able to make informed decisions to lead healthy and active lives. Swimming is an important life skill, we aspire for all children to leave primary school being able to swim at least 25 metres.

Implementation

  • The long term plan sets out the PE units which are to be taught throughout the year and ensures that the requirements of the National Curriculum are fully met.
  • Children participate in high-quality PE lessons each week covering two different sports/skills per term.
  • Teachers use and adapt planning and resources to ensure lessons across years show progression.
  • Classes follow the PE overview to ensure pupils participate in a variety of sports.
  • Children are given the opportunity to participate in a variety of competitive sporting events within the local area.
  • Children are provided with opportunities throughout the day to extend their activity levels, including: active play at break and lunch times; opportunities to take part in a range of sports with a specialist sports coach each day;  use of the Daily Mile track
  • Children receive specialist swimming coaching in KS2 with the aim of achieving a  minimum 25m distance
  • We provide children with opportunities to participate in extra-curricular activities that are inclusive, enjoyable and increase children’s physical activity.
  • We have invested in a large range of new outdoor games/sports equipment which encourages our children to be active at playtimes and lunchtimes.  Playground zoning ensures that children can rotate between a carousel of structured sports and free-play activities each lunch time.
  • Year 6 Play Leaders have received specialist training in creating opportunities for active play and team games, encouraging participation and engagement.

Impact

At Greenfield Primary School, we ensure that our PE curriculum is progressive and allows children to develop fundamental knowledge and skills and apply them within a variety of sports and activities. All children are provided with the skills and opportunities to demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best. Our pupils are physically active and this has positive implications on their learning in the classroom. Children understand how to lead a healthy lifestyle and understand the mental and physical health benefits of exercise.  We endeavour to ensure that children enjoy PE and develop a love of sport, and physical activity that they continue to pursue outside of school and in future life beyond their primary education. All pupils understand the values and importance of fair  and safe play and being a good sportsperson. Year 6 pupils leave school with the skills to self-rescue in the water and swim 25 metres competently.
