PSHE Curriculum Statement

We aim to support our children to become responsible citizens who are equipped with the knowledge, skills and attributes to make informed choices, motivated by their values in an ever-changing world. Our PSHE education curriculum promotes our school ethos.

We believe that PSHE should enable children to be healthy, independent and responsible members of society. We provide opportunities for our children to discuss and learn about the importance of a mentally and physically healthy lifestyles.

Intent

At the Central Co-operative Learning Trust, we are aware of the importance of the PSHE curriculum. Our intent is to support our children to become responsible citizens who are equipped with the knowledge, skills and attributes to make informed choices, motivated by their values in an ever-changing world.

Our curriculum will prepare children to be global citizens in a diverse society and prepare them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences for later life. The curriculum reflects the needs of our pupils. We have built on the statutory content outlined in the Department for Education’s statutory guidance for Relationships Education, Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) and Health Education and follow the Kapow model of work.

Our PSHE teaching shows clear progress across the school within the key PSHE core themes; Families and Relationships, Health and Well-being, Safety and the changing body, Citizenship, Economic Wellbeing. Each stage builds on what children have already learned, helping them grow their vocabulary, knowledge and skills previously taught to enable our children to acquire further knowledge.

The curriculum also includes age-appropriate Relationships and Sex Education (RSE), following government guidance. This helps all children learn how to stay safe and build healthy, respectful relationships—both now and in the future.

Implementation

We aim to give our children a wide range of learning experiences both within and beyond the classroom. We use resources such as those recommended by the Pan-Staffordshire PSHE Education Service, the PSHE Association and Kapow to help deliver our PSHE curriculum.

PSHE also plays an important role in our school assemblies, where children’s spiritual, moral, social, and cultural understanding is encouraged and developed.

Impact

All children understand why PSHE, SMSC, and British Values are important and how they impact life both in and out of school. By teaching pupils to stay safe and healthy,  and by building self-esteem, resilience  and empathy, our effective PSHE programme helps remove barriers to learning, encourages children to aim high and prepares them for an unknown world.

By the time they leave our school, PSHE enables our children to work towards being healthy, independent and responsible members of society. It helps them understand how they are developing personally and socially and tackles many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up.

Our curriculum allows our children to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be part of a diverse society. Our children are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in school life and the wider community.
